Lamar Community College will host its seventy‐fourth annual Commencement on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the LCC Wellness Center. 255 degree or certificate‐seeking students are eligible to walk in this year’s commencement. This includes fall 2012 graduates as well as spring and summer 2013 candidates for graduation. The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. No tickets will be required for admittance to commencement.
Student Government has selected “Time is not measured by the passing of years but by what one does, what one feels, what one achieves,” by Jawaharlal Nehru as this graduation year’s quote.
The college has invited Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture, John Salazar, as its keynote speaker. Prior to being appointed as the Commissioner of Agriculture by Governor Hickenlooper in 2011, Salazar served three terms representing Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. Salazar was also a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Veteran’s Affairs Committee, and Transportation Committee.
Salazar played a key role in passing the historic farm bill of 2008. With his seat on the House Appropriations Committee, he worked on national energy issues, jobs creation, and the economy in his third term.
As Commissioner of Agriculture, Salazar has focused on a number of vital issues including exports, Rocky Ford Cantaloupe, and the Colorado Ag Leadership Program. Salazar has also been involved in the NASDA Immigration Task Force and served as the 2012 WUSATA president and 2011 WASDA president.
As customary, students will have a significant role in commencement activities. Benjamin Hollinger and Julia Tidswell have been selected as the class student speakers. Salina Rowland will give the invocation.
To reduce congestion on the floor, family members are encouraged to take photos from their seats. Additionally, graduates’ families may choose to take photos with their graduates before entering the building or after the ceremonies have concluded.
Family members may choose to view Commencement via live web streaming. A link will be available from the LCC homepage at www.lamarcc.edu.
The College will also celebrate its 75th Anniversary Homecoming that weekend with activities before and after Commencement, including a Homecoming Luncheon directly following at the Lamar Community Building and a Social sponsored by the Lamar Elks at 6:00 p that evening.
Additionally, the College will also host its annual Nursing Pinning at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the LCC Wellness Center. 39 graduates from the college’s Level I (Practical Nursing) and Level II (Associate Degree in Nursing/Registered Nurse) programs will be pinned.
Receptions for graduates and families will follow both Commencement and the Nurse Pinning.
Parking will be available in the Wellness Center parking lot. Overflow parking is available in the large student parking lots north of Todd‐Burch Residence Hall and the Betz Technology Center, and staff parking lot. No parking will be allowed in the borrow ditches west of the Wellness Center.
