In May of 1994, after graduating from Northeastern State University of Optometry in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Dr. Gaila J. Austin moved to Lamar, Colorado, to be closer to her family in Tribune, Kansas. Once here in Lamar, she worked side by side with Dr. Jeffrey Tidswell before starting her own business. In January of 1995, Dr. Austin opened her Optometry practice at 206 South 4th, in Lamar, where she is still operating today.

Dr. Austin began her practice in a two room office with two employees, gradually expanding over the years as she became known for her wide selection of frames as well as great service. Through the years, as her business grew, new equipment and furnishings were purchased and the office was remodeled to meet the needs of all the products and services she offers. Many services are offered and include, but are not limited to, comprehensive exams, spectacle lens fittings and contact lens fittings. Dr. Austin is also Board Certified in the treatment of ocular disease. While Dr. Austin herself does not perform surgeries, she is known for working closely with Fry Eye Associates of Garden City, Kansas and has also referred patients to Wright Eye Center of Colorado Springs, Colorado. For those patients who prefer not to, or cannot travel, Dr. Clifford of Fry Eye Associates does make monthly visits to Prowers Medical Center where an evaluation and cataract surgery can be scheduled.

While the majority of Dr. Austin’s patients are adults, she does offer infant and pediatric eye care and is happy to take the time to fit them with the appropriate and required eyewear. As one might guess, the infant selection can be somewhat limited, but the older brothers and sisters as well as parents, will have a huge selection to pursue while the little ones are being fitted. The variety of frame names she offers are Luxottica, Coach, DKNY, Vogue, Bebe ColeHaan, Ted Baker, Perry Ellis, Tura, Marchon, Converse, Nike and many more, including magnetic frame clips, which all come in full metal, zyl (plastic) and grooved rimless frames.

Some of the lens services include Crizal Avance, an anti-reflective lens with an incredible UNLIMITED two year warranty, TD2, a yearlong UNLIMITED scratch coating/warranty and transition lens that changes into a dark lens once outside in the sun, which is a great option for patients who are constantly on the go and do not want the extra hassle of another pair of sunglasses to keep track of. For those choosing to wear sunglasses, Dr. Austin offers a polarized lens, which offers greater clarity, true color perception and eliminates 100% of UV/UVB rays.
