Voices of S.E. Colorado Hosting May 31 Commissioner Candidate Forum

A candidate forum will be hosted by Voices of Southeast Colorado on Thursday, May 31, 2012, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lamar Community Building, dance practice room. All candidates running for a County Commissioner’s seat, whether opposed or unopposed, have been invited to participate.

This forum is to provide an opportunity for the candidates to speak and field questions from the public in advance of the primary election to be held June 26, 2012. A subsequent forum will be conducted in advance of the general election.

The Voices of Southeast Colorado is a non-partisan group and encourages education for and participation by all voters. The public is encouraged to come and meet your candidates.

For County Commissioner, District 1, Republicans incumbent Henry Schnabel is opposed by Mike Parker. The winner of the June 26 primary will face off in the November election against Democrat, Don Seufer of Holly. For County Commissioner, District 3, Republican challengers Roger Stagner is opposed by Wendy Buxton-Andrade in the June 26 primary. Gene Millbrand, who currently holds the seat, is not running for re-election. Jillane Hixson, the Democratic challenger for the District 3 seat is being opposed by primary election write-in candidate, Doug Thrall, and the winner of that will determine who goes on to the November ballot.

Area voters and candidates should take note of these calendar deadlines:

May 25, 2012 Friday: Last day to change or withdraw from major political party affiliation for the Primary Election.
May 29, 2012 Tuesday: Last day to register to vote for the Primary Election.
June 19, 2012 Tuesday: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Primary Election if mailed.
June 22, 2012 Friday: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Primary Election if the ballot is picked up in person by the voter.
June 26, 2012 Tuesday: PRIMARY ELECTION
