EMT-BASIC STUDENTS LEARN TO GIVE BACK

(Lamar, Colorado, May 22, 2012) Lamar Community College congratulates 2012 Spring Lamar Community College Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic certificate graduates for their selfless step toward serving Southeast Colorado residents. An EMT is a staff member in a basic life support ambulance, providing routine and emergency care and transportation of the sick and injured. Upon successful completion of LCC’s 156-hour program, participants can perform complex skills such as spinal immobilization, using an automated external defibrillator (AED), assisting patients with medications, performing patient assessments, performing CPR, and taking vital signs. Successful graduates are eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Computerized Test; the exam is required to become a certified Colorado EMT. EMT courses may also be used as an elective toward an LCC Associate of General Studies degree. Many students also use the EMT training program to obtain entry level positions in healthcare fields. The course attracts those who are associated with area fire and ambulance agencies as well as those who are interested in becoming involved. Unlike other college courses, most or all of the course costs can be underwritten with scholarships from the Daniels Fund and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Provider Grant Program.

LCC will offer another EMT-Basic course this fall, beginning August 20. Classes are held on Monday & Thursday evenings and approximately three Saturdays during the semester. Registration will be open until the beginning of class. Students must be 17 years of age or older to enroll. ASCENT students and high school seniors are welcome to participate.
