Tree Time for Lamar 5th Graders

Arbor Day was observed, Thursday, April 19, in Lamar by members of the Lamar Tree Board and a host of fifth grade students. Everybody got a little dirt on their hands, and in their sneakers, as over a dozen trees were planted at four sites in Lamar.
Jane Felter of the Lamar Tree Board briefed the Lamar City Council earlier this month, that the four main entrances to the city would be the sites for an Arbor Day planting. The plantings were highlighted by the earlier announcement that this year marks the 21st year the city has received the 2011 Tree City USA Award. The award is given to those communities that display a program on ongoing improvement and renewal for their forestry programs.
Members of the Tree Board and the Lamar Pubic Works Department outlined the plans for the kids, but stepped back and allowed them the experience of preparing the root ball for each tree and planting them firmly in ready-made holes at four locations in town…at the KLMR studios, just south of SECPA, at the coop east of town on Highway 50, and near the intersection of South 14th and the airport road. Sheriff Jim Faull’s crew had a longer list, as part of their chores included giving a polishing to the Welcome to Lamar sign, visible to northbound traffic on 287/385.
