Zonta International Rose Day is always observed by Zontians on March 8, a day in which members around the world recognize the effort to advance the status of women in every culture and in all their endeavors.

The day is also celebrated as International Women’s Day, established by the United Nations thirty-five years ago in 1977 as a day to observe women’s rights and efforts to achieve international peace.  The first observance is just over a century old, celebrated in 1911 by one million women and men in several European nations.  Citizens of Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Austria campaigned for women’s rights to work, vote, hold public office and put an end to discrimination based on gender.

Zonta Club members of Prowers County celebrate Zonta Rose day today as they deliver close to 1,200 roses throughout the community.  Preparations have been underway this week this year at the Flower Boutique, South Main in Lamar.
