Walter Ely Remembered, Honored

SDS, Southeastern Developmental Services will be recognized on March 23rd with an SDS Appreciation Day Proclamation voted on by the Prowers County Commissioners this past Thursday.

Last year, Kim Engsburg, SDS director and staff held an open house to explain the goals and function of the organization which works to improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities.  Engsburg said the March 23 event will feature an arts and crafts display at the facility at 1111 South 4th Street in Lamar.  She informed The Prowers Journal a $500 education scholarship in the name of Walter Ely has been established.  Ely, who passed away December 11, 2010, was a well-known figure in Lamar from his one-man can collection drive along Main Street in throughout the community.  SDS board members will decide the first recipient from those students who submit a 1,000 word essay.  For more information, contact SDS at 336-3244.
