Business of the Week – The Flower Boutique

You help your community thrive when you shop locally!

Be sure to read The Prowers Journal each week when we highlight a featured Business of the Week.

This week we spotlight The Flower Boutique at 216 Main Street in Lamar, owned and operated by Linda Hawkins.

With great enthusiasm, we opened The Flower Boutique at 216 South Main Street in Lamar on October 27, 1986. We had two fulltime people, myself, Linda Hawkins and Gayla Dowen. Toni Mauch, my mom, Grace Payne and my daughter Lisa Hawkins helped us on a part time basis.

Our goal was to offer the freshest flowers and plants and to give outstanding customer service. I had worked at the Lamar Flower Shop for 10 years and learned a lot from my former employers, Gene and Virginia Downing who continued to mentor us for many years. Today, we have two full-time employees, myself and daughter Lisa Harvey. Kathy D. Mauch, Vanessa Rabe and Mallory Medina work part time, and if we get in a pinch, Toni and Gayle will bale us out.

Through the years, we have enlarged to be able to serve our customers better. The first time was to add greeting cards, paper goods such as paper plates, napkins, etc and more wedding items. We carry Carlton and Marian Heath Greeting Cards and paper goods in many colors, as well as specific items for parties, such as dinosaurs, pirates, Care Bears, Sponge Bob, Strawberry Shortcake and many more. We have paper goods for all holidays.

Lisa is our wedding consultant and can work with a bride to design the perfect bouquet to go with her dress and style of wedding. Lisa prices herself o keeping up with all the latest wedding trends. We can special order flowers in just the right color to match the bridesmaid’s dresses. We also have four styles of candelabra, aisle candelabra and arches. While Lisa handles the wedding side of the business, Linda handles the sympathy side. She has been around long enough and suffered some personal losses that make it easy for her to understand what a family is going through and help them to do a personal and appropriate memorial piece.

We carry a large selection of candles, our two best-known brands being Yankee and For Everybody. Yankee has a program where they select three candle scents for each month and you buy one, and get a second one for 50% off. We also redeem Yankee coupons, so if you get a coupon offer in the mail or on line, please bring it in and we will honor it. Lisa just unpacked 30 cases of Yankee candles; therefore our selection is great. Of course, we stock a large selection of mylar balloons, and even have singing balloons. We use ultra high float in our latex balloons, which make them last for a very long time.

We belong to Teleflora and FTD so we are able to send orders all over the world; we have sent orders to England, Japan, Germany and Spain. In addition, all over the U.S. and Canada. We offer many specials for each holiday and can help you pick out the perfect design, whether it is for a birthday or a holiday. We do many original designs in both fresh and permanent flowers. Just bring in a couch cushion or any item and we can design something just for you.

Our third and last expansion was to add a Christmas shop, and what better time to talk about that than in December. We have 11 themed trees to choose ornaments from. If you are having an ornament exchange for a group you belong to, we can help you pick out the perfect ornament. We have permanent arrangements that you can use year after year to decorate your home. We offer Swags, both vertical and horizontal, wreathes in all sizes, garland, angels and much more. We have wall hangings in the lodge theme, western theme, traditional and more modern. We have Christmas plush animals, electric candles, and beaded garland. The Christmas scents in candles are awesome this year—-and remember, candles make great gifts. We keep holiday arrangements made up in both fresh and silk, so all you have to do is come in and pick one out, or if you don’t see something you have in mind, we will make it up for you!

The most important part of The Flower Boutique is the customer. Our customers are the reason we are still here and we were able to celebrate our 25th anniversary this past October. Our customers are our friends and there are not enough words to express our appreciation for being with us during these 25 years. Lisa and I just simply want to say thank you and Happy Holidays!
